Uniqueness of the Bi-Metal Pipe

Bi-Metal Pipe is produced by CladTek using our own uniquely developed manufacturing process, combining the features of metallurgical and mechanical clad pipes.

Bi-Metal lined pipe combines the advantages of high strength carbon steel pipe with the corrosion resistance of alloy pipes.

This unique production method involves the insertion and dry hydraulic expansion of a corrosion resistant alloy pipe inside higher strength carbon steel outer pipe.

The resulting Bi-Metal pipe conforms to all international standards for clad or lined pipe, namely API 5LD & DNV OSF101. The carbon steel outer pipe can be of seamless or welded construction, manufactured in a material grade that has the optimum mechanical properties to suit the specific application, for example:

API 5L Grades X52, X60, X65, X70
EEMUA Grades EP360, EP415, EP450, EP485
DNV Grades 360MPa, 415MPa, 450MPa, 485MPa

The corrosion resistant alloy liner pipes are usually supplied with a wall thickness that is in the range of 1.5-3mm. The specific choice of the liner pipe material is dependent upon the corrosive nature of the flowing media, allowing for process conditions such as PH value, temperature, pressure, CO2 content, H2S content etc.

The range and choice of these liner pipes is large but typically are: 300 series austenitic stainless steels (e.g. 304L, 316L) 6 Mo super austenitic (e.g. 531254) Nickel alloy (alloy 400, 625, 825, 904L).

For the purpose of the mechanical design, the mechanical properties of the Bi-Metal lined pipe are based solely upon those of the carbon steel outer pipe.

Typical Mechanical Properties

Grade API 5L Yield MPa Strength Ksi Tensile MPa Strength Ksi Elongation in 2" (min) (Lo) %
X52 360 52 455 66 27
X60 415 60 520 75 26

What is different about CladTek Bi-Metal Pipe?

CladTek have the ability to produce pipe with welded ends using a premium quality hot wire tig weld overlay technique (patent pending), creating metallurgically clad ends.

This ensures the integrity of the pipe ends should any shortening, bevelling or cutting be required. The fully automated weld stations produce a weld that is extremely consistent and the wire feed units are capable of single or twin wire feed to achieve optimum productivity rates.

Pipe ends can be bevelled with V prep, J prep or client's specific bevel arrangement at the purpose built bevelling stations. It is also possible to have pipe ends internally machined; this enables clients to have excellent "fit up" when welding pipes together, a flush pipe bore can be provided if required. The CladTek method of production ensures that virtually no wastage or loss of parent carbon steel pipe occurs during production.

CladTek offer uniform lengths of pipe, such as 12.2 metres, which is of tremendous benefit to lay contractors being ideally suited for lay barge weld stations.

The manufacturing process works equally as well using a seamless carbon steel outer pipe or a welded carbon steel outer pipe. Pipe sizes range from 4" through to 42" diameter and can be manufactured with various wall thickness. Pipe lengths can be produced to suit requirements but typically are 6 metres, 12 metres or 18 metres long.
